Michelin introduces regroove service

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Aug. 13 French tyre major Michelin on Monday announced a unique ‘regrooving service’ that the company claimed potentially enhances the life of old truck tyres by about 20 per cent. “This is something which we offer to our valuable customers globally and we plan to extend similar facility to truck tyre users in India. This service will be available through a chain of dealers trained in handling this delicate task,” Mr. Jason Cooper, Road Staff and Training Manager, Michelin, said.

Mr Cooper said: “regrooving is much different from retreading. While retreading is done by adding a fresh layer of rubber on to a worn out tyre, regrooving is done on the worn out tyre directly.”

This regrooving process handled by trained experts potentially adds up to four mm of fresh groove and thereby makes the tyre much safer to use even on a wet, rainy surface, Mr Cooper explained.

The company has embarked on a process to train workers in handling this delicate task of regrooving the existing tyre. They have set of tools to handle this. Apart from adding life to the existing old tyre, this also saves up to 10 per cent in fuel, he said.

Asked why the company was addressing a market that cuts into their own business, Mr Cooper said that this was part of their effort to help their customers to extract maximum out of their investments. In fact, on the tyres sold by Michelin, they also come with a mark that they are regroovable.

The company appointed Sushil Tyres as their first dealer to handle this value added service in India.
