Coir Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Coir exports slip 5.72%
Our Bureau Kochi, Aug. 14 Appreciation of the Indian rupee against the dollar has affected coir exports. Quoting from Coir Board statistics, Mr T.A.K. Rahman, President of the Cochin Coir Merchants Association, said there was a fall in exports by 5.72 per cent in value terms during the April-July 2007 period compared with the corresponding period last year. Addressing the 64th AGM of the Cochin Coir Merchants Association, Mr Rahman said in this era of globalisation and resultant high levels of competition, the performance of the export sector depends on numerous factors. So export alone would not be able to support the coir industry in the long-run and as such there is an imperative need for effective measures to develop the domestic market as well. Exports up
As against the export of 71,334 tonnes of coir and coir products valued at Rs 320.58 crore during 2001-02, the country’s exports had touched 1,68,754 tonnes valued at Rs 605.17 crore in 2006-07. This included 67,153 tonnes of coir pith worth Rs 53.82 crore, 9,356 tonnes of coir fibre valued at Rs 10.76 crore and 1,804 tonnes of curled coir worth Rs 2.84 crore. This remarkable export growth could be achieved thanks to the removal of various regulations and restriction, the Association said.
