Visakhapatnam, Aug. 17

Space Hospitals (Chennai) is taking telemedicine to the remote corners of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, with focus on the smaller cities, according to Mr Vinayak Venkatesh, General Manager (Operations).

At a press meet here on Friday, on the occasion of launching operations here, Mr Venkatesh said the telemedicine facility entailed the networking of referral hospitals and introduction of mobile vans fitted with the equipment such as V-Sat terminal to facilitate consultation.

He said that “Video conferencing facility is provided and those conducting medical camps in remote rural areas can have access to specialists and super-specialists. We have tied up with 22 hospitals so far in Andhra Pradesh and 70 in the country.”

Mr Venkatesh said the hospital was planning to introduce at least 650 such mobile medical vans in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu this year to connect the rural areas. “It is a powerful communication tool between a general practitioner and a specialist available at a remote location and the idea is to move the clinical information rather than the patient,” he explained.

Mr Haroon, the region head, Space Telemedicine, said “there is greater acceptance for telemedicine now, as people are growing increasingly aware of its usefulness.”
