Water Six States fail to send health status of dams to Centre
Our Bureau New Delhi, Aug. 18 A number of State governments have failed to submit the necessary health status reports of large dams to the Central Water Commission during the last two years. There are 99 large dams across the country that are more than 100-years-old and the Dam Safety Cells of the State governments are supposed to check the health of the dams regularly and submit an annual report to the Central Water Commission under the Ministry of Water Resources. Defaulting states
Out of the 16 States where these dams are located, six State governments have not sent any reports to the Centre on the physical conditions of the dams located in their respective States during the last two years. They are – Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Punjab, Uttarakhand and West Bengal, according to official sources. The States that have submitted the necessary reports are Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. Expert teams
The Union Government on its own does not have the power to send expert teams to check these dams as it is the responsibility of the States. The Central Commission can arrange to send experts only on receiving specific request from the States. No such requests have been received from the six defaulting States in this regard during the last two years.
