The Hindu Business Line : Govt targets green power in 11th Plan

Hyderabad, Aug. 18 The Union Government has targeted to take the total capacity of all Green or eco-friendly energy sources by 14,000 MW during the 11th Plan Period from the present 10,500 MW.

The total potential for Green power is estimated at 1.83 lakh MW.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, the Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Mr Vilas Muttemwar, said the Ministry has asked the Planning Commission for Rs 1,500 crore every year during the Plan period to promote Green power.

“Power from renewable sources holds the key to electrify 25,000 villages that are inaccessible.

“It is not possible to provide power to these villages using regular power lines, or it is not cost-effective. Green power could solve this problem,” he said.

Mr Muttemwar is here in connection with the Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas (renewal energy day), scheduled to be held on August 20. The fete includes half marathon for men (21km) and three-km run for fun.

Simultaneously, a three-day exhibition will be held beginning August 20.

Mr Muttemwar said the Ministry is in the process of studying the road map suggested by the expert group on hydrogen energy.

The group was headed by Mr Ratan Tata.

Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh Government has announced that it would soon come out with a new policy to promote wind energy in the State.
