Japan business interest ‘not diminishing’
Our Bureau
New Delhi, Aug. 20 India does not see any diminishing in the interest of the Japanese business community towards it, the Foreign Secretary, Mr Shivshankar Menon, said on Monday.
“There is a large delegation of about 180 business people coming with the Japanese Prime Minister, Mr Shinzo Abe, which is a measure of how our relationship has grown in the last few years. The two countries are also in the process of discussing a comprehensive economic agreement on which steady progress has been made and we hope to complete in two years,” the Foreign Secretary said.
Project delay
Questioned on the reported delays in some projects in which the Japanese were involved, Mr Menon felt that as the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor and the freight corridor were projects requiring large funds it would be wrong to think that they could be done in a few months. “These large projects are a measure of our ambition as no one would have thought of these a few years back,” the Foreign Secretary said.
The Japanese Prime Minister delegation includes the vice-chancellors of several Japanese universities who would look at further enhancing education relations between the two countries.
In a departure from protocol the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, would host a private dinner for Mr Abe. During the three-day visit, Mr Abe is also to address a joint business meeting.
While refusing to be drawn into what the two leaders would discuss, Mr Menon said the discussions were expected to cover the entire range of issues, including political issues, Asian integration and defence issues.
