Partnering a pact

Negotiating bilateral agreements is definitely a difficult task, but how difficult it can be dawned on the journalists recently. Prior to the Abe visit, a senior Government official confessed at a chamber meet that India and Japan have spent almost two years to decide what sort of an economic engagement they want. The bone of contention seems to be whether to go in for an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) or a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

The matter has still not been decided, so the joint statement issued at the end of the meeting between Manmohan Singh and Shinzo Abe had a paragraph reaffirming the importance of and EPA/CEPA. Journalists are now trying to find out the difference between “economic partnership” and “comprehensive economic partnership”.
