The Hindu Business Line : Centre to grant Rs 2,500 cr for urban projects in AP

The Andhra Pradesh Government is set to secure about Rs 2,500 crore in the form of Central grant for various urban projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

In a statement, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said on Friday that the Centre has selected Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam as mission cities.

Hyderabad alone is set to witness investments of Rs 26,257 crore in various projects, including Rs 4,600 crore for the 161-km outer ring road, Rs 1,700 crore for Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Rs 8,424 crore for Hyderabad Metro Rail Project and Rs 2,027 crore to develop 31 radial roads connecting the outer ring road.

Under the JNNURM schemes, for projects in Hyderabad, the Centre’s share will be 35 per cent and the State will contribute 15 per cent and respective urban local bodies will have to raise 50 per cent.

And for Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada, the Centre’s share will be 50 per cent, State’s 20 per cent and corporations need to raise 30 per cent. Further, within municipalities, the Government’s share will be 80 per cent, State’s 10 per cent and urban local bodies 10 per cent.

Referring to identification of three cities under mission for development, Dr Reddy said that the objective of these cities is to provide affordable housing along with proper civic amenities for those without pucca housing in slum settlements.

Under the new scheme, works worth Rs 2,242 crore have been sanctioned for the three cities.

The State is considering a move to identify all inoperative accounts of Government money that are locked in various branches of several banks aimed at utilising them on projects of public interest.

The Chief Minister, along with the State Finance Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, reviewed the funds locked in inoperative accounts and directed officials to formulate an action plan with the assistance of State Level Bankers Committee to put them to constructive use.
