UP urged to review order on closure of retail outlets

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Aug. 25 The Retail Association of India (RAI) urged the Uttar Pradesh Government to review its decision to shut shops of modern retail outlets in Varanasi and Lucknow. It said that modernising the Indian retail sector would lead to a faster economic growth.

“We, from the Retailer’s Association of India, do hope that the respective governments will review the decision so that customers, retailers and farmers are benefited. If we all take efforts to modernise the Indian retail sector, the economy of India will grow faster,” said Mr Gibson G Vedamani, CEO, RAI, in a statement.

“Retailing in India is a business activity that contributes to the economic growth of the nation. Mapped with the growth in the retail space in a survey, retailing in India is expected to create 2.2 million jobs in the next two years, and it will offer first time employment opportunities to many in any state.”

The organisation said that modern retail can only help farmers and food producers to sell their goods directly to retail stores with better revenue realisation.
