Numbering violation: Bharti told to stop short code services

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Aug. 27 The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has asked Bharti Airtel to stop offering a host of services using short codes since it is violating the national numbering plan.

The Government had earlier said all short codes should be a five digit number and should also start with the number ‘5’.

Short codes are used by operators and content service providers to offer messaging-based facility such as opinion polls, downloads, voice chat and FM radio.

TRAI has pointed out that Bharti Airtel has violated the numbering plan stipulated by the Government for short codes in more than 10 occasions.

The regulator has asked Bharti to immediately discontinue these services and report compliance within seven days.

Bharti Airtel said: “Industry had been given time till August 31 by DoT up to which both old and new short codes could be used. As per the DoT’s order and TRAI’s regulation, we will be fully compliant with the national numbering plan on five digit short codes by the said date.”

The services which have come under TRAI’s scanner include Voice Chat on the 694 platform, Devotional service using 64684, Airtel FM with a short code of 630063, Marathi mobile radio on 69650, and Free Hello Tunes dialling 678.
