Mangalore, Aug. 27

The Karnataka Government will soon convene a meeting in Bangalore to discuss the problems of arecanut and coffee sectors, according to the Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr H.D. Kumaraswamy.

In an informal chat with presspersons on the sidelines of the foundation stone laying ceremony for various development works of Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (KPTCL) and Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (Mescom) Ltd in Mangalore on Monday, Mr Kumaraswamy said that he has received memorandums from various people on the widespread loss in arecanut plantations due to fruit rot disease.

Stating that even the coffee sector is facing problem in the State, he said he would convene a meeting in Bangalore in eight to 10 days to discuss the problems of these sectors. All the stakeholders, including growers and traders, will be invited for the meeting. "We want to find a permanent solution for these problems," he said.

Earlier speaking at the function, Mr B.S. Yediyurappa, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister, said that arecanut plantations in the region have suffered a loss of nearly 60 per cent due to fruit rot disease.

The Chief Minister, who laid the foundation stone for 11 sub-stations of KPTCL and Mescom in the region, said that these works will be taken up at a cost of Rs 137 crore.

Stating that the Mangalore SEZ project will put Mangalore on top of the industrial map of the country, he said the Government will give suitable compensation for farmers whose lands will be acquired for the project.

Earlier in the day, both the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister laid foundation stones and inaugurated various development works at Bantwal taluk in Dakshina Kannada district.
