Raise SME standards

The reports of growth and expansion plans of Hindustan Motors, JK Paper, Norit, Bhushan Steel plant, Oberoi group and Fortis (Business Line, August 28), are all encouraging.

Yet other reports saying that there is some slowdown in manufacturing, and that the rupee value is affecting exports and employment are disturbing points to be addressed in this context.

“Without SMEs, India’s growth story will not happen” (Business Line, August 28) may be right.

But we should also think of some better strategy and culture to raise our SMEs to better standards.

A Jacob Sahayam Thiruvananthapuram
