The Hindu Business Line : Stress on HR strategies to check attrition

Companies are faced with the challenge of keeping employees happy, motivated and gainfully employed, as attrition rates are rising in most of the industries, and therefore suitable human resource policies are need to be evolved and implemented, according to Mr Pradeep Dhobale, Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry, Andhra Pradesh, and Chief Executive of ITC’s paperboard and specialty paper business.

He was delivering the key-note address at a seminar organised here by the CII on the theme ‘Building engagement among employees’.

Creative Potential

He said that several studies had shown that hardly “60 per cent of the employees are engaged even in well-run companies. The concept of ‘employee engagement’ covers the whole gamut from properly rewarding the employee to bringing out the creative potential in him or her. Therefore, as poaching is on the rise in most sectors, companies must focus a lot on proper human resource policies.”

He said the ITC-Bhadrachalam was one of the first companies in the State to address the problem and the employees were given shares to create a sense of belonging among them. “Several other companies are adopting the same strategy now,” he said. He also exhorted companies to invest more in R&D.

Mr Saugat Mukherjee, Director, CII, Andhra Pradesh, spoke about the efforts being made to conduct a survey in the State for skill mapping and “to find out what the companies really require and what is available in the market.”

Dr Varma Vegesna, Chairman of the CII (Vizag), and Mr C.G. Patil, General Manager (Marketing), Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, also spoke.
