Trade & Labour Unions Dunlop staff stage demonstration
Our Bureau Chennai, Aug. 28 Workers, led by the Dunlop Factory Employees Union at the Dunlop’s factory in Ambattur, staged a demonstration here on Tuesday demanding the reopening of the facility. Dunlop India Ltd suspended production on August 7 citing ‘trade reasons.’ At that time the management, the Kolkata-based Ruias, had said that production was affected because the factory had lost a portion of land to a Chennai-based developer to whom the previous management of Dunlop — the Chabbrias of the Jumbo Group — had sold surplus land in 2004. The developer, Mr V.N. Devadoss, also the Managing Director of VGN Enterprises, a real estate company, had bought over 60 acres from Dunlop, a sick company, through the BIFR. Subsequently, when the buyer started work on the land, the Ruias who had acquired Dunlop in 2005, said that they had lost an ‘unmeasured’ portion of the factory land and production was not possible. The union leaders said that the management was using the land deal as an excuse to delay production. The factory had not been in production from April 27, despite having over Rs 15 crore worth of raw material. According to the union, the company was yet to settle its dues to over 200 workers who had opted for an early retirement scheme.
