Wipro’s Atlanta unit to groom local engineers

A training centre will be set up to provide technical and soft skills training to the employees at the facility.

Bangalore, Aug. 28 Wipro Technologies’ new Atlanta facility will offer training in software development for local American engineers. As the company continues its expansion across the globe, it is now in the process of choosing a location for its first development centre that will seat 500 in the state of Georgia, US.

A training centre will be set up to provide technical and soft skills training to the employees at the facility. The firm has tied up with the University System of Georgia for edification.

Through Georgia’s Intellectual Capital Partnership Programme, its 35 public colleges and universities will be tapped to offer a workforce development programme. Kesaw State University and Southern Polytechnic State University are collaborating with Wipro to create an innovative curriculum development and delivery system.

Localised service

The company plans to sponsor higher education degrees for up to 40 per cent of its employees for training and development. For the first year, the Wipro Atlanta facility will hire over 200.

By its third year of operation, the facility is expected to employ over 500 employees — local domain experts. These hires will allow Wipro to offer localised and better customer service for its expanding technology services business in the Americas.

“The work we’re doing requires more and more knowledge of the customers’ businesses, and you want local people to do that,” said Mr P.R. Chandrasekar, President, Wipro Technologies, in a release issued by the company.

“The Atlanta centre will help address new business opportunities.”

Wipro has over 12 offices in the US, and the Atlanta centre will strengthen the company’s growing global delivery capabilities, which include development centres in Brazil, Eastern and Western Europe, China, Mexico and Canada.
