AP may grant extension for irrigation engineers

Hyderabad, Aug. 30 Call it do-or-die or carrot-and-stick, irrigation engineers in Andhra Pradesh have been left with only one option.

The State Government, which has launched the Rs 1 lakh crore Jalayagnam to conceive and complete a number of irrigation projects, small and big, has dangled a carrot of service extension to all its irrigation engineers.

At a review meeting of the Irrigation Department here on Thursday, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, said all the engineers, starting from the chief engineer to the last engineer in the hierarchy, would be given an extension of two years provided that they do their bit well in completion of the projects.

Several Bottlenecks

“The proof of pudding is in the eating. Success of a project is based on how effectively it is providing water to the end user—farmers,” he said, leaving a veiled threat to the engineers. “Ensure to meet the deadlines. I do accept that there are several bottlenecks. But ultimately it is your responsibility to see to it that the projects are completed on time,” he said.

“Should you face any problems, bring them to the notice of the secretaries, the minister and Chief Minister’s Office,” he said.

He also had a word of caution to the politicos. “They should not interfere in issues related to land acquisition,” he pointed out. Qualifying the term politicians, he said the category included the Irrigation Minister and also the Chief Minister, a Government press release said.
