Outlook Industry & Economy - Electrical Goods NTPC in talks for making power plant equipment
Our Bureau New Delhi, Sept. 7 NTPC is in talks with established players to manufacture power plant equipment. “NTPC is in talks with some people for technology transfer and expertise,” said the Power Minister, Mr Sushilkumar Shinde, on the sidelines of an NTPC event. NTPC had marked its foray into the equipment manufacturing business by taking 44 per cent equity stake in Transformers and Electricals Kerala Ltd (TELK) early this year. According to company officials, it is eyeing similar opportunities. Currently, BHEL is the only state-run company engaged in power equipment manufacturing; private companies include Alstom, ABB, Siemens and General Electric. The Power Ministry has consistently maintained that BHEL, which has over Rs 40,000 crore of orders in hand, is “overburdened” and that there was a need to establish another State-owned supplier. BHEL, which comes under the Ministry of Heavy Industries, has also been blamed by the Power Ministry for much of the slippages in capacity addition during the last Plan period. Speaking to newspersons, Mr Shinde said that the Dabhol power project in Maharashtra resumed power generation last week after Petronet LNG Ltd began gas supplies. The gas is being sourced from Petronet’s Dahej LNG terminal in Gujarat. Mr Shinde also said that the Government is in the process of awarding two more Ultra Mega Power projects shortly.
