Aquaculture Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Tuna exports surge 88%
Our Bureau Kochi, Sept. 7 Tuna exports from the country have surged by 88 per cent to touch Rs 130 crore. The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) is in the process of introducing new technology and products to boost exports of value added tuna. Addressing the training programme to impart skills to exporters in processing these products, Mr Kuruvilla Thomas, Director of Marketing, MPEDA, said going by the current trend, exports of tuna was expected to cross Rs 200 crore this year. At present, tuna is exported from India mostly in the whole frozen form. However, the country has started exporting Sashimi grade tuna as well following MPEDA’s Tuna Development Programme. Market potential
While exporting Sashimi grade tuna loins, almost 50 per cent of the tuna meat goes waste. Now, MPEDA in association with Maple Foods of Tokyo is planning to convert this portion of meat into value added products such as tuna croquette, tuna jerky, tuna pate, tuna roast, tuna sausage etc. Maple Foods Ltd, one of the leading importers of Indian seafood to Japan plans to import these value added products and said that they have a great market potential in Japan. In his address at the training programme, Mr Tetsuji Totsune, President of Maple Foods, assured full cooperation of the company in developing tuna industry in India. If the quality standards of the products could be maintained, he also assured the participants that his company would continue to buy these value added products.
