Tea Good demand at Kolkata tea sale
Our Bureau Kolkata, Sept. 9 Last week, the CTC teas in the North Indian auction centres met with good demand, according to J. Thomas & Company Private Ltd, the tea auctioneers. Good Assams and larger CTC brokens sold at firm to dearer levels while the rest tended easier. There was good inquiry from the major blender, western India and other internal markets, with export interest in larger brokens. Orthodox teas saw strong demand at firm to dearer levels with good inquiry from CIS, Iran and West Asian markets. Darjeeling varieties also saw good inquiry at firm rates. CROP prospects
Heavy rainfall was reported last week from the tea growing districts. Crops are currently following a seasonal pattern. As per Tea Board estimates, the July crop in North India was lower by 0.9 million kg and in South India by 2.1 mkg vis-À-vis the same period last year. The all India crop till July stood at 459.8 mkg as compared to 460.5 mkg in the same period last year. Global markets
Kenyan teas at Mombasa saw strong demand from Pakistan, CIS and West Asia at all around dearer rates. The Kenyan crop in July declined by one million kg to 22.7 mkg and the reports suggest that the August crops too were lower. In Colombo, the demand improved significantly and markets reacted upwards.
