Infrastructure States - Kerala Malaysian firm to build satellite township
Mony K. Mathew Thiruvananthapuram, Sept. 10 Kerala and Malaysian Governments have joined hands to establish a satellite township at Kinalur near Kozhikode. The agreement between the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation and the Construction Industry Development Board, Malaysia, was signed in Kozhikode today by the KSIDC Managing Director, Mr P.H. Kurien, and the CIDB Chief Executive Officer, Mr Hamzah bin Hasan, in the presence of the Malaysian Works Minister, Dato Seri Samy Velu, and the State Industries Minister, Mr Elamaram Karim. The project, Integrated Industrial Township, will be spread over 275 acres and will feature knowledge-based industries, medical city, condominiums, entertainment centres and other related infrastructure. According to officials in the Industries Department, the land was acquired by KSIDC long ago for the purpose of developing an Industrial Growth Centre. Since the corporation did not receive any investment proposal, the land has been lying idle with no work having been carried out for providing basic amenities. Project funding
The current proposal envisages investment to the tune of Rs 500 crore by CIDB for development of infrastructure in the project area. The Malaysian board will bring in industrial investments of another Rs 2,000 crore, taking the total project size to Rs 2,500 crore. The employment potential, both direct and indirect, is estimated at 25,000. The officials said that this would be the biggest industrial investment in northern Kerala after Mavoor Rayons of Grasim Industries, which was closed down. In terms of employment opportunities, the industrial township will score over the Mavoor Rayons, which employed around 4,000 people at the peak of its operations. KSIDC has already started work on putting in place basic amenities such as roads and water and power supply for the project.
