9 closed tea gardens in Kerala re-open

New Delhi, Sept. 16 The recently announced rehabilitation package has seen nine of the 17 tea gardens in Kerala re-open. An official statement issued on Sunday adds that five gardens were in the process of settling their accounts and will open soon.

Similarly, in West Bengal, one of the 14 closed tea gardens has started functioning, three are in the process of being taken over by new management, two gardens are negotiating with banks for restructuring their outstanding dues, while the owners of two other gardens are looking out for prospective buyers, the statement points out.

The Government asked owners of the closed tea gardens to avail themselves of the rehabilitation package by the end of August and reopen the gardens expeditiously, the statement adds.
