Human Resources Shortage of marine officers, pilots As the world economy grows, the demand for more ships and aeroplanes to ferry more passengers and cargo rises but what causes concern is the shortage of marine officers as well as air pilots. The shortage of marine officers has reached a crisis point, accentuated also by the rising tide of safety and qualification rules and extension of the life of ships instead of scrapping them. Shipping companies are finding it really difficult to locate good quality officers. The present crisis, it is felt, is due to the short-sighted policy in the past in regard to recruitment and training of cadets. Maintaining high standards while developing mass pilot training programmes will be a growing challenge given the demand for 18,000 pilots a year worldwide over the next two decades. Boeing and Airbus have forecast that the world’s fleet will more than double over the next 20 years, which means the world’s airlines will require an additional 25,000 planes by 2025, adding to 17,000 planes flying.
