Hardware ‘Intel was never in talks with Govt for fab facility’ Our Bureau Chennai, Sept. 17 The Government’s semiconductor policy, or the delay in announcing it, had nothing to do with Intel’s decision to not set up a manufacturing plant in India, according to a senior Government official. “Intel was never in discussions with the Government for setting up a fab manufacturing (or semiconductor fabrication) plant in India. They were only discussing the setting up of an assembly-test-mark-and-pack facility,” said Mr Jainder Singh, Secretary, Department of Information Technology. He was responding to a query from newspersons on recent remarks by Mr Craig Barrett, Chairman of Intel, that the Government’s delay in announcing a semiconductor policy forced the chipmaker to shift its plans to China and Vietnam from India. He was speaking to newspersons on the sidelines of Connect2007, this year’s ICT event organised by the CII and the Tamil Nadu Government. Mr Barrett recently told newspersons in Tindivanam, around 130 km south of Chennai, that Intel decided to set up its manufacturing plants in China and Vietnam following delays in India announcing its semiconductor policy.
