Cos must adopt self-regulation on staff health policies: CII

Our Bureau

Chennai, Sept. 17

Companies must take a self-regulatory role in enforcing health related policies for employees and not wait for the Government to bring out a policy.

Mentioning Union Health Minister Dr Anbumani Ramadoss’ plans to bring out a health policy for IT employees, Mr T.T. Ashok, Chairman, Corporate Social Responsibility sub-committee, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) – Southern Region, said: “Companies would not like to have bureaucratic interference and policing by the government in this regard.”

Speaking at a CII organised session on ‘Life Skills Management- A Holistic Approach,’ he said the CII would study the ailments prevalent among IT industry employees and carry out suitable awareness workshops across South India, starting with Bangalore and Hyderabad.

Mr Lakshmi Narayanan, Vice-Chairman, Cognizant Technology Solutions, said companies needed rigour in implementing aspects of mental and physical well being among employees.

“There is rigour in imparting technical training. But we seldom address mental and physical health aspects,” he said.
