Re impact: Kochi tea buyers’ body seeks more sops

Exports, average price realisation fall

Our Bureau

The Tea Buyers’ Association, Kochi, has said the concessions given by the Government to alleviate the problems faced by the exporters were not adequate enough to overcome the difficult situation brought about by the rupee appreciation. At the 34th AGM of the association, the President, Mr Krishna Kumar J. Shah, said the association had taken up this matter with the Union Minister for Commerce and Industry seeking appropriate steps.

Fall in exports

Also, there had been a fall in exports from South India since March. Exports through the Port of Cochin during January to July were 37.2 million kg, down by 16 mkg compared with the same period a year ago.

During the period, a total quantity of 33.64 mkg were sold through Kochi auctions with the average price being Rs 57.53 as against 36 mkg and Rs 52.46 during the corresponding period last year.

Even though there was a decline in quantity, the centre could maintain its top position in terms of quantity and average price among the South Indian auction centres, he said.

Production figures

According to estimated tea statistics for 2006-07, the North Indian production went up to 724.8 mkg from 704.02 mkg whereas the South Indian production dropped from 226.93 mkg to 222.37 mkg.

The reconstituted managing committee of the association at its first meeting has unanimously elected Mr M.K. Ajit as President for 2007-2008. Mr Mustafa Moosa and Mr Jinesh C. Dagli are Vice-President and Honorary Secretary, respectively. The managing committee members are Mr Anil Kumar N. Prabhu, Mr Benzy Jose, Mr Krishnakumar J. Shah and Mr Dharmendra Vora.
