Letters Mutual loyalty This has reference to the article “Loyalty : An over-rated virtue ?” (Business Line, September 21). The author has rightly underscored the need for both the employer and the employees in an organisation to be loyal to each other. Virtually, it’s the trust that can bind them together for a protracted period and ensure mutual benefits. It is imperative that the employees are provided security of job, besides a reasonably good salary, future benefits such as Provident Fund and Gratuity, and some fringe benefits, such as a free lunch, transportation facilities, medical re-imbursements, etc. Basically, it is the job security and good remuneration that motivate the employees to give of their best which, in turn, would benefit the employer in terms of turnover, profit and reputation of the organisation. Given the natural tendency of the human mind is to think that the grass on the other side of the fence is greener, motivating the search for newer pastures, it is time employers seriously think of putting in place a suitable personnel policy (promotion according to merit and seniority, enhancing salary and other benefits, taking into consideration the cost of living index) to keep all their staff intact.
