PromotionsAnnouncing this bonanza for the cricketers, the Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, said that six members of the winning team who are Air India employees – the captain M.S. Dhoni, vice-captain Yuvraj Singh and Robin Uthappa, Irfan Pathan, R.P. Singh and Harbhajan Singh – would also be given out of turn promotions. “Air India would have had seven players in the winning team had the contract of S Sreesanth not expired a few days before the start of series. This is a much better offer than awarding money as the playing life of the cricketers is limited and promotions are something that will be for a longer period,” Mr Patel said. And while AI may not be ready to sponsor the Indian men’s cricket team, according to the Minister, the airline would surely look at promoting the women cricket team. But what would be the benefit to the airline? “These cricketers are the new maharajas of the sport and what can be better than to be associated with the Maharaja of the skies,” said the the Minister instantly. Air India will salute the world champions of tomorrow, with the Chairman and Managing Director Mr V. Thulasidas along with the Minister welcoming the team as they step off the Emirates flight from Dubai at the Mumbai airport. In addition, a media campaign along the lines of ‘The new world champions: the new Air India’, is also planned. Meanwhile, Sahara India Parivar, the main sponsor of the cricket team, announced that it would gift a house worth about Rs 25 lakhs to each of the 15 players from across 217 locations across the country where the company has real-estate projects.
