Bio-tech & Genetics States - Andhra Pradesh Focus on bio sectors, students told Our Bureau Visakhapatnam, Sept. 28 The fields of bio energy and bio-pharmaceuticals are of immense promise and importance, as the fossil fuels are getting depleted at an alarming rate, and several new diseases are plaguing the mankind, according to Dr T. Ravi, Chairman and Managing Director of Biokrebs. He was addressing students and teachers at the inaugural session of the two-day seminar on bio-technology and pharmacy organised by Al-Ameer College of Engineering and IT at Gudilova near here on Friday. Dr Ravi said production of ethanol from bio-mass at cheap costs was the key to meeting the energy crisis. Bio-diesels would have to be produced to meet the energy needs. research centreDr Ravi said Biokrebs was a medium company with Rs 100-crore turnover, manufacturing a cholesterol-producing enzyme inhibitor. “We have a manufacturing plant near Anakapalle in Visakhapatnam district and another one in Nellore district. We are into anti-virals of late,” he said. Dr K. Rajagopal, Vice-chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, who presided over the session, said JNTU had set up a research centre to experiment with 26 types of bio-diesel. “Bio-diesel will roughly cost Rs 20 a litre. The technologies are available and entrepreneurs can make use of them. We will lend the technical support,” he said. Prof T. Panda, Head of the bio-technology department, IIT (Chennai), delivered the keynote address. Prof C. Ayyanna, Principal of the college, and Mr I.H. Farooqui, Correspondent, also spoke on the occasion.
