GI for Nilgiris, Assam teas soon

Coimbatore, Sept 29

get GI (Geographical Indication) registry by the year end, Tea Board Chairman Mr Basudeb Banerjee said. At the 25th annual general meeting of the Tea Trade Association of Coimbatore, Mr Banerjee said the board took the cue from ‘Darjeeling Tea’, which already had the GI stamp, to get the registry for the popular Nilgiris high-growns and Assam Orthodox to prevent the misuse of these unique teas from India. The GI registration is useful in fetching better prices, he said, referring to the Darjeeling teas, whose price levels never slipped below the industry average. “In the event of misuse, we can take legal action, take the issue to WTO, sue for infringement,” Mr Banerjee said.
