Power Corporate - Human Resources Manpower crunch: Power firms to adopt ITIs Anil Sasi New Delhi, Sept. 29 Tata Power, Lanco Infratech, Jindal Steel & Power, Reliance Energy, National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) and Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) are among power utilities that have chalked out plans to establish new industrial training institutes (ITIs) or refurbish existing ones in the employment catchment area of their upcoming generation projects to tackle the manpower crunch in the power sector. The Centre has convened a high-level meeting next month to deliberate on ways to tackle the shortage of skilled manpower in light of the massive capacity addition programme on the anvil for the current plan period. In response to the Centre’s “Adopt an ITI” scheme, a bevy of private and public sector utilities have come forward with steps to set up or upgrade ITIs around project areas to ensure availability of trained manpower. Tata Power plansTata Power Company Ltd, which bagged the Mundra Ultra Mega Power project in Gujarat last year, is working out plans for adopting ITIs in the upcoming project site. The company has also identified six ITIs in Mumbai close to the generating stations it operates. State-owned NHPC has proposed plans to adopt seven existing ITIs in Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Sikkim, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Jindal Steel and Power Ltd has plans to adopt the ITI at Talcher in Orissa, while Reliance Energy, which was recently awarded the Sasan Ultra Mega Power project in Madhya Pradesh, has citied its willingness to augment and upgrade ITIs around project areas. Damodar Valley Corporation also plans to support existing ITI in Jharkhand and West Bengal as part of the initiative. More Stories on : Power | Human Resources
