IIT Madras annual technical fair begins

Chennai, Oct. 3 The annual technical festival of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras ‘Shaastra 2007’ took off today and will continue till Sunday.

The five-day festival will showcase several projects by the students including Yu Fly, that implements a working model of the latest kind of VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft based on fluid mechanics principle known as Coanda Effect. Another project is a bio-diesel plant that has been set up by the students with an initial capacity of 5 litres per day and has now gone up to 30 litres per day.

The Director of the Institute, Mr M.S. Ananth, told presspersons that the biofuel has been mixed with diesel in a vehicle manufactured by Ford Motors and has been certified to be successful by the company officials.

The festival is sponsored by a host of corporate houses including Bosch, Microsoft, Google, GE, and Autodesk and was formally inaugurated by the Managing Director of Motor India Company Ltd, Mr Alfred Heronimus.
