12 major ports record growth, but miss target

T.E. Raja Simhan

Chennai, Oct. 5 Twelve major ports recorded a 14 per cent growth in cargo handling at 244 million tonnes in the six months to September, over same period last year, but they missed the Shipping Ministry’s target of 252 million tonnes.

All ports, except Mormugao, handled more cargo in the first half of the current year than in the same period last year. Four ports — Chennai, New Mangalore, JNPT and Kandla — achieved more than the target, according to tentative numbers released by the Indian Ports Association.

In a fight for the top spot, Kandla edged Visakhapatnam port by just 78 tonnes.

Kandla reported a 29.69 per cent growth in cargo handling in the first six months at 30.691 million tonnes (23.66 million tonnes) and Visakhapatnam was second with a 16.93 per cent growth at 30.613 million tonnes (26.18 million tonnes). Chennai was third with 28.22 million tonnes (26.02 million tonnes).
