Courts/Legal Issues States - Andhra Pradesh HC stay on Vizag land deal hailed Our Bureau Visakhapatnam, Oct. 10 The Forum for Better Visakha and Samata, another NGO, have welcomed the stay issued by the Andhra Pradesh High Court on the allotment of land to the Vizag Knowledge City project at Kapulauppada by the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) and auction of certain other sites by the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA). In a statement here, the two organisations welcomed the interim order issued on Monday by the High Court. The public interest petition was filed by Mr E.A.S. Sarma, a former IAS official and the forum co-ordinator, and Mr R. Ravi, Executive Director of Samata, against the sale of hillocks. They contended that the sale of lands on hillocks would lead to grave ecological imbalances. The APIIC had chosen a Gurgaon-based company for the Knowledge City project and it was decided to sell 1,750 acres to the company for the project. The stay issued by the court applies to the Knowledge City project as well as VUDA notification for sale of bulk plots at Bavikonda and Yendada. Another petition filed by the Telugu Desam leader, Mr T. Sitaram, challenging the finalisation of bids for the Vizag Knowledge City project, is pending in the High Court. The petitioner pointed out certain alleged irregularities in the process and questioned the allotment of 1,750 acres of land on the hillock to what he described as real estate business disguised as knowledge city project.
