Give infrastructure status to health sector: CII

Hyderabad, Oct. 9
The Confederation of Indian Industry has asked the Union Government to accord infrastructure status to the health care sector to help it attract investments.
The infrastructure tag would help a number of hospitals to get the crucial funding required to scale up their activities, Dr Prathap C. Reddy, Chairman of CII’s National Committee on Healthcare and Apollo Group of Hospitals, said.
Dr Reddy, who is also the Chairman of Apollo Group of Hospitals, was addressing a CII conference on ‘Healthcare services’ here on Tuesday.
Key verticals
The CII will hold a national-level meet on the sector to discuss the key verticals of insurance, human resources and basic research. “After the meeting, we would go to the Ministries of Health and Finance and to the Planning Commission to impress upon them on the need to develop these verticals,” he said.
Citing McKinsey and other reports, Dr Reddy said India would need to add 80,000 beds a year in the next five years. “Currently, States like Andhra Pradesh have one bed for every 1,100 people. It is 1:1400 in Uttar Pradesh. But the WHO recommends a ratio of 1:600,” he told reporters later.
In order to reach that figure, the country needs to double the bed strength in the next four-five years.
