General Insurance States - Tamil Nadu Tiruchi growers seek revision of banana crop cover scheme Our Bureau Tiruchi, Oct. 10 The Tiruchi District Plantain Growers Association urged the Central Government to revise the crop insurance scheme for banana with a view to ensuring indemnity to individual farmers in case of crop loss. A resolution to this effect adopted at the anniversary of the association held at Lalgudi near here said that plantain was more prone to damage by gale and floods. Indemnity was being reckoned based on sample surveys conducted at random. The provisions of the crop insurance scheme should be redefined, so as to be field-specific and benefit individual farmers. The premium for the insurance should be fixed based on the returns realised by the farmers during the previous season and not on the scale of finance fixed by the funding agencies. New DemandsThe meeting, by another resolution, demanded steps for setting up an export processing zone in Tiruchi, as there were vast areas under the banana crop in central districts in general and Tiruchi in particular. The zone, if set up, would ensure attractive returns to the farmers, besides improving cultivation of export oriented quality plantains in the region. Referring to the perishable nature of plantain, yet another resolution called for setting up cold storage facility in the district.
