Hyderabad, Oct. 13 Leading automotive manufacturer Tata Motors Ltd today unveiled a range of specialised purpose vehicles for Defence applications, including armoured vehicles and general purpose bullet proof vehicles for high net worth individuals. The company has brought together its entire range at the Military Games 2007 here being held during October 14-20, which is like Olympics conducted every four years.

The company displayed a range of armoured vehicles including armoured bus, a troop carrier, a bullet proof Sumo and Safari, at a vast pavilion at the Gachi Bowli stadium here.

The Managing Director of Tata Motors, Mr Ravi Kant, said that the best part of these bullet proof vehicles is that they look just like any other ordinary vehicle and provide additional security. Tata Motors produces 11 models for military and paramilitary applications and sold about 7,000 numbers last year. The company sees growing demand for such vehicles both from both domestic and overseas markets. However, it did not disclose the value of these vehicles.

Addressing newspersons, the General Manager of Tata Motors for Defence Business, Mr Vernon Noronha, said that the company’s indigenously developed armoured bus is being displayed for the first time. This 29-seater bus features shatter proof glass, under-belly blast protection and side bomb protection.

The Light Armoured Troop Carrier is a bullet proof vehicle that could carry 10 persons and is equipped with features such as NIJ (National Institute of Justice, US) Level III protection for crew, hand grenade protection for underbelly, six firing ports and weapon mount. This could run on flat tyres and uses explosive suppressant material.

The company sees armoured Safari and Sumo having multiple applications, including for Defence use.

Earlier, the Union Minister for State for Defence, Mr Pallam Raju, who inaugurated the armoured vehicle display here today, said that there is immense scope for private sector participation in various Defence applications.

Over the next five years, it is estimated that there is potential for about $10-billion business under the offset policy opportunity, wherein a Defence supplier has to necessarily develop about 30 per cent of their products in India.

In fact, this is as high as 50 per cent when it comes to multi-role combat vehicles and equipment.
