Divya Trivedi Mumbai, Oct. 13 Grasim, an Aditya Birla group company, has plans to raise viscose production at its facility in Kharach near Surat by 23 per cent or 63,875 tonnes per annum. The increase, which translates into an additional production of 175 tonnes per day, will hike the capacity of the Aditya Birla Group to 3,38,875 tonnes per year from 2,75,000 tonnes per year. “Viscose is going to be the leader in the future and we want to support our value chain partners for the purpose,” said Mr Sunil Dhawan, Vice-President, Business Development, Grasim. Company made machineries will be installed at the Kharach factory for increasing the production, he added. Viscose is made of natural fibres, giving it a colour brilliance and shine making it the favoured fabric for the manufacture of apparel, saris, upholstery, suit linings, etc. The company will concentrate on the domestic market for viscose, according to Mr Dhawan. It exports only 7-10 per cent of its total output, which amounts to 42 per cent of viscose exports from the country. The company has two facilities at Nagda in Madhya Pradesh and Harihar in Karnataka and one each in China, Thailand and Indonesia for the production of the viscose fibre. India ranks second in the production of viscose after China. With a global market share of 23 per cent, the Aditya Birla Group, is the second largest producer of Viscose Filament Yarn (VFY) in India.
