New Projects Industry & Economy - Steel States - Other States Anti-POSCO activists free labourers Our Bureau Bhubaneswar, Oct 15 Eleven labourers, who were detained by villagers opposing the proposed mega steel plant project of POSCO-India five days ago, were finally released on Monday evening. The anti-POSCO activists had abducted 10 carpenters and a driver on Thursday last when they went to construct a wooden bridge, which was reportedly meant for facilitating smooth entry for the POSCO officials to the site earmarked for the steel project. POSCO Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS), the organisation spearheading an agitation against the steel project, released the labourers in the presence of police after the local administration agreed to stop work on the bridge. The PPSS President, Mr Abhay Sahu, claimed that they released the workers only after the State Government’s Rural Development Department transported back the logs of wood that had been brought to the area for construction of the bridge. The Officer-in-Charge of Kujang police station, Mr Amarendra Panda, said the abductors safely released the workers. They were not harmed during the five days’ detention, he said. Interestingly, the authorities started discussion with the PPSS leaders only on Sunday four days after they were taken hostage by the POSCO protestors. The PPSS activists had abducted four officials of POSCO-India when they had gone to visit the area on Saturday morning. The administration had swung into action and the four employees, three of them Korean nationals, were released after six hours detention.
