Standards & Benchmarks Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports States - Andhra Pradesh CSA cautions against imported packaged foods Our Bureau Hyderabad, Oct. 16 The Centre for Sustainable Agriculture (CSA), a city-based NGO working in non-pesticide management agriculture, has cautioned that the imported packaged foods from retail stores could be made of GM (genetically modified) products. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Ms Kavitha Kuruganti and Mr G.V. Ramanjaneyulu of CSA, said a random visit to local retail outlets showed that a variety of packaged products being sold at retail outlets could contain GM ingredients and derivates. The NGO released an ‘alert’ to the consumers, listing out the products in the areas of soy sauce, soya milk, soya milk products and health mixes. No legislationThey alleged that there was no regulation at all on such products, with the Ministry of Environment and Forests exempting GM food products from regulatory processes. “This has opened the floodgates for import of GM food products into the country,” they said. “There is no labelling mechanism as well, leaving no choice for the consumers to decide whether to buy GM food or not,” they alleged. “Millions of consumers in India are not aware about GM as a technology is being deployed in their food production. Those who are aware of it, there are no choices left,” they said. More Stories on : Standards & Benchmarks | Exports & Imports | Andhra Pradesh
