Small spinners seek declared power cuts

G. Gurumurthy

Coimbatore, Oct.18 South India Small Spinners Association (Sisspa) has asked the State Electricity Board to turn the undeclared power cuts into scheduled power cuts to save the industrial consumers from production loss and equipment damages.

In a statement, the association maintained that most parts of Tamil Nadu is experiencing electricity stoppages lasting six hours a day and these power cuts are not notified in advance.

Frequent breakdown

The frequent undeclared power break-down has seriously disrupted production in the textile mills marked by high yarn breakages leading to quality defects and damages to the sophisticated electronic equipment used in production processes.

The mills incurred 25-30 per cent production loss due to this, it said.

Considering the fact that mills can sustain operation only if they achieved 92 per cent productivity, it is essential on the part of the state electricity board to announce a scheduled power cut that will help the mills plan their production schedule and avoid losses. The Sisspa has also urged the TNEB to quantify the power cut percentage and accordingly bring down the rate of maximum demand charges levied on the industrial consumers.
