DoS favours satellite-based tech for wireless services

Thomas K. Thomas

New Delhi, Oct 18 At a time when the Communications Ministry is finding it tough to make available radio frequency for cellular operators, the Department of Space has suggested deploying satellite- based technologies for wireless services such as mobile TV as it requires a high bandwidth.

Better reach

In response to a consultation paper floated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, the DoS said, “It is well recognised that satellite-based services have certain unique advantages that other technologies cannot intrinsically match. The wide reach of satellite can provide instant one-shot coverage of the entire country and can reach areas which terrestrial systems cannot reach or will take long time to reach. This is particularly important in India where vast swaths of remote and rural areas cannot be physically or economically connected by other technologies. We strongly believe that for mobile television services as well, satellite will continue to play a major role.”

Global phenomenon

DoS said that globally satellite technologies are enabling the delivery of mobile broadband and multimedia services to handheld devices. “Department of Space has made significant technological advances in providing similar satellite based services in India. DOS’ current initiative is a modern hybrid system that provides a critical national platform for delivery of broadband multimedia inclusive of mobile TV service. The system, whose development is already well under way, will economically deliver IP-based services to a variety of mobile devices,” said the note from Mr A. Bhaskaranarayana, Director, Satellite Communications Programmes, Department of Space, Indian Space Research Organisation. DoS has offered to meet TRAI officials to discuss the suggestions in detail.

On the other hand, mobile equipment vendors such as Qualcomm and Nokia Siemens have sent their suggestions for promoting terrestrial technologies such as MediaFLO and DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting – Handheld) for providing mobile TV service.
