Telecommunications Marketing - Trends Phone user base touches 250-m mark Our Bureau New Delhi, Oct. 22 Even as the telecom industry battles out spectrum and other technology disputes, the subscriber growth rate continues to be on a high. With nearly six million new subscribers being added every month, the December 2007 target of 250 million have been achieved two months ahead of time. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said that the 500 million target by 2010 is a reality. “A total of 7.64 million telephone connections have been added during September 2007. Keeping the growth projections on conservative scale, the subscriber number has already crossed 250 million, the target for December 2007. Thus the expectation of 500 million by 2010 is by no means ambitious,” said a TRAI release. The target of 15 per cent of tele-density by 2010 as envisaged in New Telecom Policy 1999 was earlier achieved in September 2006, four years in advance. The tele-density has now reached 21.85 per cent. Subscriber baseIn the wireless segment, there was an addition of 7.8 million subscribers in September as against 8.31 million addition in August. The total wireless subscribers (GSM, CDMA & WLL(F)) base reached 209.08 million. In the wire line segment, subscriber base decreased to 39.58 million in September as against 39.73 million subscribers in August. During the first six months (from April to September) of 2007, 42.8 million telephone subscribers have been added compared with 29.7 million during the corresponding period in the previous year.
