‘Low wages proving costly for Railways’

Our Bureau

Kakinada, Oct. 23 The sixth Pay Commission should take note of the fact that the low wages in the Railways are driving many technical personnel out, as the private sector is offering them lucrative salaries and plum postings, according to Mr P. Swamy Charan, Divisional Secretary of the South Central Railway Mazdoor Union, Vijayawada division.

He told reporters here on Tuesday that the union had made it clear that even the employee on the lowest rung should get at least Rs 11,000 a month and that time-bound promotions be given to employees from Group D to Group C category.

Citing examples, he said that as many as 50 designers in the SCR zone had quit the jobs and joined private companies. “The exodus has already started and the pay packet of more than a lakh per month offered by the private sector is proving irresistible to many of these employees,” he said.
