Team meets PM on Indo-US N-deal

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Oct 23 A delegation of Indian-Americans, who lobbied in the US in favour of the Indo-US civil nuclear deal, met with the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, here on Tuesday. The 10-member delegation, led by the United States India Political Action Committee (USINPAC) Chairman, Mr Sanjay Puri, is also slated to meet leaders of Left parties and the BJP over the next couple of days to assess the position of various political parties on the nuclear deal.

“The meeting (with the PM) went off really well. He explained to us the need for evolving a consensus in a democracy,” Mr Puri said. The USINPAC has been lobbying for the Indo-US nuclear deal with key policy makers and office bearers of the American establishment and have provided an impetus to the process of the deal getting through in the US Senate.

“While we remain upbeat that the Indo-US nuclear deal will be seen through to its conclusion in a form that makes the best sense for both the countries, time is going to be the most critical factor in determining the fate of the deal,” Mr Puri said.
