`Smartphone support costly'

Bangalore, Oct. 24

Smartphones are costing the mobile industry almost four times more to support than mid-range feature phones, according to a report from WDSGlobal, a provider of wireless lifecycle management and support solutions. Based on a study of customer care operations in the US, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australasia, the `Supporting Complex Mobile Devices' report states that while this increase directly correlates to the complexity of the smartphones, their owners have far higher expectations and hence engage with support departments far more frequently. This results in longer calls and a need for skilled support agents, both of which contribute to the 387 per cent hike in the `cost to support' (a measure by which an organization can calculate a device type's likely support costs during its lifetime). - Our Bureau
