Madurai, Oct 25 Industries need to combine and co-ordinate their activities to improve further and reach new heights globally, said Mr P. Vijayaraghavan, President - Baroda Manufacturing Plant, Reliance Industries Ltd.

He was delivering the keynote address at the one-day conference ‘Madurai Rubber 2007’, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Madurai Zone, here on Thursday.

Mr Vijayaraghavan said that in the last century, initiatives in terms of quality, concern for the environment and development in the field of information technology have brought about a paradigm shift that can take industries to new heights. In a competitive scenario, the speed with which industries respond to changes has become a determining factor in measuring success.

There is the need also to adopt the best manufacturing practices and engage in private-public partnership initiatives to facilitate the growth process. Industries, instead of competing and racing among themselves, can combine and co-ordinate their activities to improve further and reach new heights globally, he said.

Delivering the inaugural address, Mr Gopal Srinivasan, Chairman, CII Tamil Nadu State Council, expressed serious concern over the non- availability of skilled manpower in a growing scenario. “Out of 12.5 million added to the workforce, only about three million have necessary qualifications. Skill shortage is a serious issue”, he said and suggested starting of an institution to build skills in rubber industry with a world class curriculum combined with ICT skills and facilitated further through e-learning.

Speaking further, he stressed on the industry evolving a programme of affirmative action for social inclusion of deprived sections.

Mr W.S. Satchidanandam, Chairman-Madurai Rubber 2007, in his theme address, observed that exports in the rubber industry increased by 22 per cent compared to last year. Mr R. Dinesh, Vice-Chairman, CII Madurai Zone, stressed on the need for a focus on substantial growth in infrastructure to maintain the momentum of development.

Speaking to presspersons later, Mr Srinivasan said that CII has taken the initiative to set up a ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu with a contribution of Rs 10 crore under public-private partnership to evolve a world class curriculum and impart training in skills to faculty in educational institutions.
