WTO Doha Round nearing conclusion: Kamal Nath
Mr Kamal Nath Our Bureau New Delhi, Oct. 30 India has said that negotiators were closer than ever before for the conclusion of Doha Round of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) talks. “Where we are today, is closer than ever before to closing the Doha Round. In the next two months I hope we will be able to find some convergence on it,” the Commerce Minister, Mr Kamal Nath, said at the Fortune Global Forum here on Tuesday. He added that India’s main concern was on the issue of agriculture and unless its sensitivities were taken on board, it would not be able to exercise flexibility in other areas. India, Brazil and other developing countries have been asking the developed countries such as the US and European Union to cut farm subsidies, while resisting pressure mounted by them for reducing industrial tariffs. “We are willing to negotiate commerce but not willing to negotiate subsistence farmers and livelihood security. Member countries are keen to find convergence at the Round, which can be concluded if sensitivities of the nations in agriculture and industrial products are respected,” Mr Nath said. The Commerce Minister also said that the draft text on agriculture and industrial products has been circulated and a negotiating process has started, enabling countries to work out their responses. He added that India’s position on agriculture has been conveyed to the US, which is ready to show flexibility in the meeting. More Stories on : WTO
