New Delhi, Nov. 6

IT training and global talent development company NIIT on Tuesday entered into an alliance with US-based NComputing Inc, a provider of virtual PC solutions, to enable schools across India to offer affordable computer education to students.

As part of the alliance, NIIT, which offers computer and computer-aided education to 1.5 million students in over 5,000 schools, would bring its expertise and reach in schools while NComputing would offer its technology.

Tapping unused capacity

The NComputing solution is based on the principle that today’s PCs are so powerful that majority of applications only use a small fraction of the computing capacity.

NComputing’s technology taps this unused capacity so that it can be simultaneously shared by multiple users. This means each user connected to the main terminal can simultaneously work on different applications such as word processing, Internet browsing, e-mail and spreadsheets among others.

The buyer, on his part, needs to invest in NComputing’s access terminal, to transform multiple sets of monitor, keyboard and mouse into full-fledged standalone computers. NComputing access devices and software can allow up to 30 users to access the capability of a single PC.

The new partnership aims to promote NComputing’s shared computing solution from the Kindergarten to 12th standard education system. NIIT has already deployed the solution in 20 schools across the country under the ‘NIIT School Station’ project, and is also in talks with various State Governments.

The agreement was signed between Mr L. Balasubramanian, President of NIIT’s School Learning Solutions, and Mr Raj Shah, Chief Marketing Officer of NComputing.
