SBT to give loan for coir workers in Kerala

V. Sajeev Kumar

Kochi, Nov. 6

The Coir Board, for the first time in the State, is introducing a new scheme in association with the State Bank of Travancore to provide financial assistance to coir workers.

The scheme, to be launched shortly, will provide a loan of Rs 35,000 to each worker to set up spring sheds, procuring motorised rats for weaving as well as for working capital.

The repayment period of the loan will be seven years and the bank will avail an interest rate of 4 per cent. The Board will provide a subsidy of 25 per cent.

Mr A.C. Jose, Chairman of the Coir Board, said that the scheme would be implemented in four panchayats of Kanjikuzhy, Chertalla, Thuravoor and Kayamkulam in Alappuzha district in the first phase, and later would be extended to other centres throughout the State. Around 400 workers in these panchayats would benefit from the new scheme, he added.

New technology

Speaking on the occasion, Dr U.S. Sharma, Director, Central Coir Research Institute, said that a new technology has been developed by the Institute to treat the un-soaked green husk/dry husk fibre with a vegetable oil in water emulsion for improving its softness for better spinning performance and output with practically no breakages during spinning and improving its texture and shade uniformly.
