Campaigns to end beaching

A new green group has launched campaigns to recycle ships and end beaching, according to Shipping Gazette. The Netherlands-based International Ship Recycling Association (ISRA) aims to promote exchange of knowledge, experience, ideas and training programme and worldwide ship dismantling in an environmentally friendly way. The facilities at the demolition yards must be certified to the latest international standards, it is emphasised. ISRA will be governed by the Dutch law but would like to start work on the International Legislation, the chairperson of ISRA has been quoted as saying. Two Chinese, six Turkish, a Dutch and an American yard, together with National Ship Association of Turkey, have so far joined ISRA but the plan is to have more members particularly from the developing countries where yards must accept the prescribed guidelines and upgrade their facilities.
